How it works

Simple to install. Powerful in use.

01

Connect the Gateway

The gateway connects to your router via a dedicated Ethernet cable — not Wi-Fi — and forms the home's Zigbee 3.0 network in seconds. Appears automatically in Home Assistant through ZHA, no pairing code, no cloud account, no extra app to install.

03

Control the ecosystem

Set the temperature per zone from the app, from Home Assistant, or right on the thermostat's screen. Schedule per-room hours, tie the pump to any active zone through your own automations, and track consumption — all local, with no external server that can go down.

Why ZAO

Not just an app.

01

Real hardware, designed from scratch

ZAO isn't a shield bolted onto someone else's thermostat. Every board — thermostat, gateway, control center, boiler controller — is designed, prototyped and tested in-house, with components chosen for long-term reliability.

02

Buy once. Control forever

No subscription, no mandatory account, no server that might disappear in two years. The system runs locally over Zigbee — if the internet drops, your thermostats keep heating the house.

03

Direct support from the people who built it

PCB design, firmware and system architecture built in Romania. When you write in with a question, you talk to the engineer who designed the board — not a support chatbot.

FAQ

Everything you need to know.

What is Zigbee and why is it better than Wi-Fi for thermostats?

Zigbee is a low-power wireless protocol designed for sensors and actuators. Unlike Wi-Fi, Zigbee enables 2-3 year battery life (not 3-6 months), low latency (50ms vs 200-500ms), and a self-healing mesh network where devices communicate even if the gateway is temporarily offline.

How does ZAO integrate with Home Assistant?

The ZAO gateway connects via Ethernet to your router and appears automatically in Home Assistant through Zigbee2MQTT. No cloud account or subscription required. All devices pair in seconds using the pair button. 100% local control, no dependency on external servers.

How much does a complete ZAO system cost?

For a 3-room apartment (8 heating zones): 3-4 E-Ink thermostats (€135-240), 1 Zigbee gateway (€50-80), 1 8-zone control center (€120-180), 8 thermostatic actuators (€120-200). Estimated total: €425-700. Early adopter pricing will be confirmed at 2026 launch.

Is installation by an electrician required?

Partially. Thermostats are DIY-friendly (wall screws + Zigbee pairing in 15-20 min each). The 8-zone control center requires a certified electrician for 230V actuator wiring, 16A pump connection, and boiler control. Estimated time: 3-5 hours for 8 zones.

How long does the thermostat battery last?

The 4.2-inch E-Ink display with capacitive touchscreen consumes very little power (5-10μA standby). The built-in LiPo battery provides 2-3 years of autonomy. USB-C charging every 2-3 years. By comparison, Wi-Fi thermostats with LCD require battery replacement every 6-12 months.

Does it work with my existing boiler?

Yes, in 99% of cases. Compatible with: condensing gas boilers (Viessmann, Vaillant, Ariston, Bosch) via dry contact or eBUS, classic gas boilers, wood/pellet boilers (pump control), air-to-water heat pumps, and electric boilers. The control center provides a 16A pump relay + dry contact relay.
